Editor’s note: I’ve tried to complete and send this newsletter episode about 10 times off and on over the last couple of weeks, but I’ve been so depressed about the new state of the world and overwhelmed by my own work in it that I haven’t been successful until right about now. So, sorry about that!I started this newsletter as a way to bring some order to my reading and create some sporadic, lighthearted joy around book recommendations.

Before we are blessedly inundated with lists of books to look forward to in 2025, I wanted to provide you with my favorite reads of 2024. What makes a favorite? Just as when Associate Justice of the Supreme Court looked at prurient materials and rendered whether qualified as pornography, I know them when I see them. Some tell-tale signs of a favorite read include: I would rather pick it up than put it down. It makes me think critically about life without seeming like homework.

I’m simply not making my Favorite Books of the Year post until I squeeze in as much reading as possible before the end of the year. (You’ll see it in a couple of days, I hope.) These are the last few days of the year, designed for those of us in the chilly northeast with good bosses to hang out in our pajamas and mainline all the books that we haven’t gotten to yet. For me, an ideal scenario.

I don’t think I’ve made my politics a secret in the contents of this newsletter, but if they somehow seem clandestine to you, allow me to clarify. I didn’t want Donald Trump to be president once, never mind twice, and now I’m very scared about what the results of this election mean for me, my loved ones, and our country. I don’t have any helpful advice or platitudes. I’m just kind of freaking out, and this is not how I like to identify to be honest.

I’ve been switching back and forth lately between two Japanese-themed shows, and I’m realizing that I probably wouldn’t be polite or honorable enough to make it in either one of their worlds. First, there’s Shogun, the opulent adaptation of the novel that’s accomplished the rare feat of capturing the public’s imagination and sweeping away television critics at the same time. It’s got about a thousand Emmy nominations, and it’s the channel’s most watched show of all time, which is so wild.

My head is reeling. Oh, what is this feeling? Does it have a name? Yes! Patriotism. I’m as surprised as you are that I’m maintaining peak patriotism these days. On July 4th of this year, you would have found me wearing all black after the latest SCOTUS term if I had bothered to stay in the country. Which I didn’t. But all of a sudden thanks to two major events, I’m sticking a feather in my cap and calling it macaroni. First, the political vibe shift.

If I absolutely must vacation in the summer, I try to plan on avoiding the heat. So, this year my husband and I traveled to various locales in South America, literally hauling off to a different hemisphere to beat the heat/humidity and visit places we’d never been, and the vacation turned out to be more bookish than usual. I always visit bookstores wherever I go even if I don’t speak the language well because foreign countries seem to have a lot of fun with book culture.

Listen to this article 2 minIBA CEO Zach Wilcha explains why being a champion for LGBTQ+ diversity, inclusion and equity is not only the right thing for local business to do for people, it’s also the best thing to do for the bottom line. Pride Month is when LGBTQ+ communities and our allies come together to celebrate and honor those who came before us and empower community solidarity, visibility, and identity as well as resistance to discrimination and violence.

Whoa. It’s been a minute! I’m caught up in the craziness of Pride season as a brave soldier who works in the LGBTQ+ nonprofit space. For us, the end of May and all of June are the equivalent of Thanksgiving through Christmas for elves. When I’m not out giving talks or participating in some woke advocacy scheme, I’ve been trying to catch up on things at home. As a result, it’s been a month without a newsletter and an ever-growing pile of finished books to write about.
