    BUTLER TWP — With commencement happening and next year on the horizon, Jake Friel, Butler County Community College vice president for finance, gave the board of trustees a positive review of the community college’s finances for the month of April. At the board’s Wednesday, May 14, meeting, Friel said the month of April, from a revenue standpoint, is typically pretty quiet, and that it will pick up in May when summer session tuition shows up on the charts.

    Over a dozen Slippery Rock University seniors had one last chance to show off their artwork before they bowed out at graduation. Sixteen students at the university’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program had the opportunity to share the artwork they created for their capstone programs. The artwork was displayed at the Martha Gault Art Gallery in the Maltby Center, located on Maltby Avenue at the university. Commencement ceremonies took place May 10.

    Slippery Rock University students’ disability sports program on May 2 highlighted changing perspectives and inclusion with Slippery Rock Area High School students. Students from SRU’s Disability Sports Course, who lead the interactive session with 40 high school students, showed how sports can be adapted for those with disabilities. The goal of the program was to raise awareness for people with disabilities while applying concepts from their course about adapted physical activity.

    BUFFALO TWP — Freeport’s school board will have more time to make a decision on its high school’s future. With questions over project funding and potential tax hikes, and the state of the physical structure of the high school, the board is expected to vote at its June 11 meeting on whether the district will spend tens of millions of dollars to renovate the high school. The board had been expected to vote on potential renovation at its Wednesday, May 14 meeting.

    Moniteau School District has a proposed final budget of $26,735,955 with no tax increase for the 2025-26 school year. The school board voted to move the budget proposal forward for public input at its Monday, May 12, work session meeting, before voting on final approval next month. The district plan includes using $2.71 million from the existing district fund balance to make up a shortfall between expenditures and revenue.
