Introduction Against the backdrop of an erupting Black Lives Matter movement in the mid-2010s and early 2020s, “racial capitalism” suddenly became the watchword of the day. Not only did activists begin to emphasise connections between racist policing and capitalist reproduction (Issar 2021; M4BL 2016; Ransby 2018), but the term also enjoyed a revival in the academy (Levenson and Paret 2023). This book documents the emergence and development of the theory of racial capitalism in apartheid South Africa. It interrogates the specificity of this theory in the South African context and draws lessons for its global applicability. Racism and capitalism have a long history of entanglement. Nowhere is this more evident than in South Africa, where colonial and apartheid regimes used explicit systems of racial hierarchy to shore up profit.
