Niches are the ecological conditions that constrain a species to a particular habitat and role within it (Wiens and Graham, 2005; Wiens et al., 2010; Jablonski et al., 2013; Pocheville, 2015; Polechová and Storch, 2017), conceptualized by the different sets of conditions needed for a species to persist in an environment. Two predominant concepts are discussed in the literature: Grinellian and Hutchinsonian niches.
