Cartoonist Walker Tate’s debut graphic novel, Laser Eye Surgery, is due out this August from Fantagraphics Books, and today we here at The Beat have a 12-page excerpt from the forthcoming book. Laser Eye Surgery uses vision — literally, vision — as a starting point to explore themes around sight, paranoia, and the comics form (itself a visual medium, obviously).

When I was reading through candidates for this week’s list of the Top Comics to Buy for June 18, I started to pick-up on a trend — a lot of my favorite books this week play with the immaterial, the unexplainable, and the downright metaphysical and spooky. It started with Phantom Road (I’m LOVING the current arc of that one), continued into sci-fi author skewing Benjamin, and even made itself known in less obvious ways in Aliens Vs. Avengers and New Gods.

This week’s Top Comics to Buy for June 11 is an interesting list that features a lot of old things coming back new again. Chief among them is Umbrella Academy Plan B #1, which (obviously) is a new #1 comic that picks up right where Umbrella Academy left off.

Big-Ass Sword is indisputably a perfect comics title. It reels you in, takes you on a journey, and tells you exactly what this comic is going to be about — a big-ass sword. At least, that was my response when I first heard the title, used as it is for German cartoonist Andreas Butzbach’s new book from Rebellion Publishing, which is due out in November. But as definitive as that title was, it also made me think. Think and wonder. Who is wielding this big-ass sword?
