I’ve always thought that nicknames were the epitome of friendship and connectedness. I grew up watching shows and reading books where girls named Alexandra and Elizabeth were called Alex and Lizzie by their best friends, boyfriends, and family members. My name isn’t so easily condensed into a cute or quippy nickname. So if a friend ever came up with one, it meant the world to me. More than that, I felt an even stronger bond with that person and the people who called me by those names.

Throughout my life, I’ve consistently had a small group of close friends, mostly people I met in school. Different groups of people at different points in time, but whether it was middle or high school or one of the three colleges I attended, I managed to find my people. My friends would say that I’m quiet and reserved in most social settings. By black and white definitions I’m an introvert.
