For Zaire Love, a filmmaker who was born and raised in Memphis, slicing was always a part of summer. “I grew up watching it. I just didn’t know that that’s what it was called,” she told me. Slicing is an elaborate diving technique that involves cutting the water with one’s side, causing a huge splash. And for Black men in Memphis it’s a culture and an art form.
