Parliament says it will relook at its processes following the Western Cape High Court judgment that found MK Party parliamentary leader, Doctor John Hlophe, was not eligible to serve on the Judicial Services Commission. Hlophe, who is the former Western Cape High Court Judge President, was found guilty of gross misconduct by the JSC and subsequently impeached by Parliament in 2024.

Parliament’s Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Portfolio Committee says it will soon engage provincial leadership on seeking ways of improving financial outcomes for local governments. This comes after Auditor-General (AG) Tsakani Maluleke briefed the committee on the 2023-2024 Consolidated General Outcomes yesterday. Maluleke again painted a grim picture, with only 41 out of 257 municipalities receiving clean audits.

Communications Minister Solly Malatsi says he understands that some view the timing of the gazetting of policy directions for equity equivalent investment programmes and communication sector licencing as suspicious. Some reports claim the directions are aimed at favouring Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet service, Starlink. Malatsi has appeared before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee. He says work on the policy directions started last year.
