COMMENT | Lately, politics has been quite boring to follow or comment on. It’s not like nothing is happening, everything is just operational. I guess this isn’t a bad thing because if there isn’t much attention given to politics, then it means all is going smoothly, and well, operational. Of course, it could also mean that they cover up well or have good public relations skills. But let’s assume the best for the moment.

COMMENT | Sometimes, as human beings, we always try to portray ourselves as being successful, happy and achieving everything we want. Now with social media, it becomes even more so when all we ever highlight are the good things and never the bad. I don’t think it’s a social media thing. Who would want to highlight the bad stuff in their lives for the public? My wife, Sheril, brought up something interesting to me the other day.

COMMENT | I remember that in the 2013 general election, two candidates decided to debate each other, marking, for the first time, a debate between political opponents during an election in Malaysia (as far as I know). It was PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar, who was contesting in Lembah Pantai, against then Umno’s Saifuddin Abdullah, contesting in Temerloh.

COMMENT | My eldest daughter Athena Azlee is very interested in sports and athletics, and I am very proud. When she was 11 years old, she did a gold medal clean sweep of all the sprint events (100m, 200m, 4x100m, etc) during her school sports day and won the Future Female Athlete of the Year. She also played cricket for the school team and was district runner-up. When she turned 12, she also did a clean sweep of all the sprint events and was awarded the Female Athlete of the Year.

COMMENT | Last week, I attended a panel discussion on “Social Media and Politics in Southeast Asia” at Monash University Malaysia, organised by the Southeast Asia Research Centre for Digital Tech and Society. Based on Canadian-based researcher and academic Merlyna Lim’s book of the same title, the panellists were Siti Nurliza from the Sinar Project, Article 19 activist Nalini Elumai, Stefan Bachtold from Monash University, and Gayathry Venkiteswaran from the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

Gayong better not be another Mat Kilau!! Dammit! #FilemGayong #TheFatBidinFilmClub https://t.co/LW3NX8ug8q

Aziz M. Osman is back making films again! And this is one film that is hilarious and filled with socio-political commentaries that would make Mamat Khalid roll around in laughter if he were alive for sure! #6Jilake #TheFatBidinFilmClub https://t.co/RW5zrCYSzs

A couple of radio hosts made a distasteful joke about Thaipusam. Comedy can be a good way to defuse sensitive & controversial situations. It can be used as a light-hearted way to discuss heavy issues. However, what they did was not in this spirit at all. https://t.co/dIuzo3p30z
