Sewage made its way into Lake Erie near Edgewater Beach Saturday due to heavy rain, but the water quality is back to normal, according to the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. The storms caused more than 43,000 gallons of sewage and stormwater to enter the lake, marking the first time in 2025 NEORSD's underground combined sewer system was pushed beyond its limits.

The U.S. Department of the Interior is posting signs at national parks across the country asking visitors to report actions that reflect poorly on American history, but some park visitors say they're concerned about the implications. The sign posted at Cuyahoga Valley National Park's Boston Mill Visitor Center encourages people to report negative messaging about "past or living Americans." Some visiting the park, like Jay Pearson from McMinnville, Oregon had not initially noticed the sign.

Northeast Ohio is in the middle of ozone season, the period between spring and fall when air pollution contributing to ground level ozone can reach its worst. Ozone, at elevated levels, can contribute to health issues. But another threat to air quality this year is the smoke from wildfires burning in Canada. The worst of the smoke hasn’t quite hit Northeast Ohio yet, Director of Cleveland’s Division of Air Quality Christina Yoka said, but it poses a unique risk to the region’s air quality.

In all ways except physical, I am still in Chicago right now. Well, my work mind is in Cleveland, where I just reported on an architect who believes mushroom byproducts can be the building blocks of new housing. I'm now looking into air-quality issues caused by Canadian wildfires. Covering the environment can be a heavy lift some days. Weekend getaways, whatever your job may be, can be restorative.

Cleveland needs new housing. Demand for safe, affordable housing is outstripping supply, according to city reports. As Cleveland considers its options, local architect Chris Maurer is developing a novel idea for what could serve as a new building block for that housing and a medium for growing food at the same time. "It just seemed like a no-brainer that these two things should really be put together," Maurer said.
