Abusers don’t change until they face consequences (and even then, change is rare). Because abusers view their partners as useful objects, the only meaningful consequence is the end of the relationship and the services it offers. Not your suffering. Not your pleas. Abuse is not about love, and the pain he causes you does not matter to him. This is true whether he’s a violent abuser, or a more run-of-the-mill exploiter of your labor.

Sometimes I find myself in a conversation with my husband where I feel confident sticking up for myself or calling out a behavior, but it’s almost like he uses feminism as a concept against me to derail what I am saying.

Hi Zawn. As a therapist working with victims of trauma, my work includes challenging client’s inflated sense of threat (a common symptom of PTSD). Sadly many women clients developed PTSD due to experiencing assaults/ abuse perpetrated by men. Usually threat beliefs in PTSD are overestimated and their validity can be explored and reduced in therapy.

One of my favorite Facebook reels features a nurse taking over after the night shift, seeking to get information from her male colleague. His answers are incomplete, confusing, disorganized, and filled with bias.

Misogyny isn’t really about hating women. After all, if pure hate explained everything, wouldn’t that mean that only mean men abuse women, and that misogynists never seek relationships with women? Men are able to mistreat women they claim to love because of the internal logic of misogyny. They’re not irrational or unhinged; they’re following a set of rules rooted in entitlement.

Note: This reader provided this question as part of an update to ‘My husband says he’s going to change. Now what?’ You can read the update to that question here. In one of my recent discussions with my husband about gender dynamics he mentioned how I had all the power in our relationship. Which shocked me. He explained that the fact that I ran all the household logistics, made all the decisions, created and enforced our family rules, etc. made him feel powerless and inept.

“My wife won’t let me parent our child the way that I want to. Our marriage is being ruined by maternal gatekeeping!” It’s the excuse men who won’t step up use when all other excuses fail. It’s not that he’s a bad parent, you see. It’s that they just have different parenting styles, and she won’t let him use his parenting style. somehow, this man who loves his child is prevented from meaningfully interacting with his child by…what exactly? Mild disapproval from his partner?

I wanted to ask you about how I can create and encourage an equitable relationship I have just started being involved in the last 6 months. I have effectively been single for nearly 15 years, as I was so over substandard men. I thought I would be single until I died, and I was ok with that because I would rather that than be in an inequitable relationship like the ones I see around me.
