On the day when Sussex University was fined £585,000 for breaking free speech rules, the vice-chancellor wrote to all staff urging them not to speak to the media. In an email to staff that was sent yesterday morning, vice-chancellor Sasha Roseneil said: “Sussex has a foundational commitment to academic freedom and freedom of speech.”A few lines later, she said: “Given the media interest in this story, there is the possibility that journalists may contact members of staff for comment.

Firefighters were tackling a blaze in a kitchen in student housing at Sussex University’s Falmer campus this evening (Wednesday 19 March). An air fryer is believed to have caught alight and one student said that the fire was made worse when someone tried to put it out with water. The building was evacuated and it is understood that everyone was safely accounted for. Videos and photographs from the scene showed flames taking hold in the smoke-filled kitchen.

A peaceful anti-racist protest attended by thousands of Brightonians overwhelmed about half a dozen anti-immigrant protesters last night, leading to a total of zero arrests. About five or six people answered the call for a riot by far-right activists in Queens Road, Brighton yesterday – but were met by first hundreds, and then thousands of counter-protesters. Police estimate the crowd reached a size of 2,000 people.

Bangladeshi international students at the University of Sussex staged a demonstration at Library Square on Friday evening, July 19th, protesting the state crackdown on student protests in their home country. “Bangladesh is completely disconnected from the world. The government has shut down the internet all over the country. We don’t know from outside how our family is doing,” said Asfhaq, a Master’s student from Bangladesh.
