    For years, local groups in Chinatown have worked to draw large crowds to the neighborhood, to help revitalize it in the aftermath of the pandemic. They finally pulled it off last Wednesday with help from the new mayor and his team: Daniel Lurie’s inaugural party, a banquet and nearby night market, drew thousands of attendees to the streets. Videos of the DJ party, set against the backdrop of red lanterns and neon Chinese signs, flooded social media.

    The California Coastal Commission on Thursday approved a permit that will allow San Francisco to close a section of the Great Highway to car traffic permanently. The permit allows the city to close the roadway to cars between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard — known as the Upper Great Highway — as early as spring 2025. Closing the Great Highway has long been controversial, and around half of the members of the public who spoke at the meeting opposed the permit.

    For months, the writing was on the wall: A cadre of west side San Franciscans wanted to recall District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio for supporting Proposition K, which would convert a large stretch of the Great Highway into a permanent park. The measure passed this November. On Tuesday, they followed through and filed the official paperwork to begin a recall attempt. The effort is already looking like it could be an uphill battle.
