INTRODUCTION Facing a significant drop in population growth, the People's Republic of China (PRC) is using maternity benefits as a way of encouraging families to have more children. Maternity benefits in China comprise provisions for maternity leave, benefits during this period and reimbursement of associated costs for medical care and hospital stay (Gabel et al., 2019; Hu, 1997).
