1 INTRODUCTION Landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) are one of the deadliest and the most destructive natural phenomena, causing enormous socio-economic impacts along densely populated coastal areas. The western North Pacific (WNP) is the most prolific basin for TCs due to its favorable thermodynamic and dynamic environment (Gray, 1979).
