INTRODUCTION Cytochrome P450 proteins (CYPs) form the third largest protein family in plants (Nelson & Werck-Reichhart, 2011). These proteins are involved in the biosynthesis or catabolism of structural macromolecules, hormone signaling molecules, and defense-related compounds, as well as in the metabolism of xenobiotics (Bak et al., 2011). These diverse functions of CYPs were proposed to be critical for plant adaptation and evolution.
