SignificanceAs AI becomes more embedded in daily life, understanding its potential and limitations in meeting human psychological needs becomes more pertinent. Our research explores the fundamental human desire to “feel heard.” It reveals that while AI can generate responses that make people feel heard, individuals feel more heard when they believe a response comes from a fellow human.

SignificanceDuring foraging, internal representations of action values are stably encoded in neural activity and used by the brain to bias actions. Action values are updated depending on the history of choices and rewards and maintained in memory for seconds. We explore two contrasting neural mechanisms for the maintenance and update of action values during foraging: synaptic plasticity versus neural integration.
