For Harvey Wilhelm `24, community is at the center of everything he has done in his time at Grinnell. From the Natatorium, to the anthropology commons to East Street, Wilhelm has found his place wherever he has gone. Wilhelm grew up in Minneapolis, Minn. Before he came to Grinnell, he said he knew he wanted to go to a small liberal arts college and somewhere he could swim. He had two overnight visits, one for a tour and one for admitted students’ day.

The Catalyst, Grinnell College’s student-led idea incubator, held its first full-fledged launch this past Wednesday, April 24, featuring 10 student project presentations. The Catalyst functions primarily as an organization to connect community members with resources on campus for developing ideas.

Three local newspapers in Poweshiek County exist mainly in print despite the steady decline in print circulation — the Grinnell-Herald Register, the Poweshiek County Chronicle Republican (PCCR) and The Montezuma Record. Since 2005, the newspaper industry in the United States has lost one-third of its newspapers and two-thirds of its newspaper journalists, according to a Northwestern University study released in November.

Since 1967, the Black Church has served as a sanctuary for Grinnell College students to celebrate their faith and join in traditions of gospel music. March 11, 2024 From Takis, to edible cookie dough to cottage cheese, the new smart cooler vending machines on campus have elicited questions surrounding food accessibility on campus. Jeanette Moser, director of dining services, wrote in an email to The S&B that the machines were installed over winter break in partnership with Mahaska Vending Services in the atrium of the Humanities and Social Studies Center (HSSC) and the basement of the Charles Benson Bear `39 Recreation and Athletic Center.

Looking for something to spruce up your room? The succulent is the perfect addition to the Grinnell College student’s shelf. This past Wednesday, March 6, Rose Hall Community Advisors (CAs) Fabio Montilla `24 and Ian Feld `25 hosted a community gardening event where students selected a succulent of their choice, packed it firm with dirt and seeds and painted the outside of the pot to their liking.

As Grinnell College’s ultimate frisbee open team, the Grinnellephants, toss their way into the ring of national champion hopefuls, they bring with them their camaraderie and close-knit community. This year, the team consists of two squads that players can choose between — the travel squad and the campus squad. The travel squad attends competitions, while the campus squad players instead opt for a less intensive experience while still attending practices.
