Plows were working Monday to clear a closed stretch of a main highway in Ontario's cottage country after intense snow squalls battered parts of the region over the weekend, stranding motorists and prompting one town to declare a state of emergency. Ontario Provincial Police said they are working with the Ministry of Transportation toward reopening Highway 11 to traffic.

Sin embargo, según los últimos datos del Ministerio de Recursos Naturales de Canadá, sólo se plantaron unos 46,6 millones de árboles. El año pasado, el gobierno tampoco logró alcanzar su objetivo. Around 30,000 properties were still without power on Vancouver Island on Thursday morning, as B.C. Hydro crews continued to repair the damage from the bomb cyclone that began battering the region late Tuesday. Environment Canada is now warning that another storm is approaching southwestern British Columbia and, while it's forecast to be less intense than the previous one, it still has the potential to cause damage and disruption and slow down clean-up efforts.

THE LATEST:Schoolchildren on Vancouver Island had to shelter in place, and Highway 4 has been closed near Port Alberni due to downed trees on Vancouver Island. Multiple ferry routes have been cancelled (new window), and others are at risk of cancellation, to and from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland due to high winds. At least five highways (new window) have been closed on Vancouver Island due to downed power lines, debris and fallen trees.
