IntroductionCystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystem autosomal recessive genetic disease affecting more than 160 000 people worldwide [1–4]. It is caused by mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which result in the abnormal production, function or transport of the CFTR protein [5].
