There is a surface-level application to the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) that is pretty obvious. If you come across someone robbed and beat half to death, you should help them. I can think of very few people (Christian or not) who would argue against such an ethic. It’s basic golden rule stuff. And while it’s easy to affirm, it’s anything but easy to practice. Especially when you get more details. And Jesus is giving details.

For the bulk of Hebrews 12, the writer encourages his readers to persevere in faith and “run with endurance” by “looking to Jesus” (Heb. 12:1–2), even through seasons of trial and discipline (Heb. 12:7). Endurance under such circumstances would indeed be difficult, but there was grace and strength to be had in abundance in the consideration of the crucified Christ (Heb. 12:3).

Anything else would be too small of a thing for you, his people. “For those he saved are his delight, precious in his holy sight. For your life he bled and died; justice has been satisfied” (CW 813:2-3) and so it is too small of a thing for you to be only about yourself. He has too much invested in you. Before the creation of the universe he knew you. Before you were born he loved you.

We find our Lord reclining at a table surrounded by a coterie of religious elites and other high-ranking officials. Carl Sandburg once defined poetry as “the opening and closing of a door.” I like that definition because it focuses less on what poetry is and more on what poetry does. Poetry gives you a glimpse of something. A door opens and closes. In between the opening and the closing, you catch a glimpse of something. You do not have everything, but you have a glimpse. And the more you think about that small glimpse, the more it grows into a larger vision which transforms your world.
At the Cross

As the apostle Paul brings his letter to the Galatians to an end, he offers one final appeal to the gospel of Christ crucified in the midst of which he, likewise, reveals that these concluding words were written with his “own hand” (Gal. 6:11). This, of course, makes the Galatian epistle unique since it is probably the only biblical piece of writing that Paul wrote himself from start to finish.
