Anyone who has raised teenage boys knows they don’t truly get full. Not really. They just pause their relentless eating—for maybe an hour—before resuming with renewed vigor. The only word that seems even remotely adequate to describe this adolescent phenomenon is voracious. That same word aptly describes my approach to books.

    There is a surface-level application to the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) that is pretty obvious. If you come across someone robbed and beat half to death, you should help them. I can think of very few people (Christian or not) who would argue against such an ethic. It’s basic golden rule stuff. And while it’s easy to affirm, it’s anything but easy to practice. Especially when you get more details. And Jesus is giving details.

    For the bulk of Hebrews 12, the writer encourages his readers to persevere in faith and “run with endurance” by “looking to Jesus” (Heb. 12:1–2), even through seasons of trial and discipline (Heb. 12:7). Endurance under such circumstances would indeed be difficult, but there was grace and strength to be had in abundance in the consideration of the crucified Christ (Heb. 12:3).
