Your community senior center. Have you ever ventured inside? No? Perhaps because your engaged lifestyle doesn’t include Bingo, square dancing, and sing-alongs. Senior centers have noted your absence and are reinventing themselves to adapt to a more diverse and active older adult demographic. It’s a complicated change for an institution that began post-WWII as an answer to the urban isolation of older adults.

It certainly may be a sweeping cliché to say that we Boomers are (collectively) bigger readers than our children and their offspring. And of course, even if this is true, there are many exceptions, including my own daughter who is a voracious consumer of books. Also, it’s important to note that e-books and audio books have been a great success for those who don’t need or want a physical volume in their hands to peruse—young folk and many seniors alike.

You say “Boomers.”  I say “Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll!” I also say: “Lentil Loaf and Tofurkey. And Vegetarian, Vegan, Macrobiotic, and Organic.” If you relate to those foods and labels, you might remember how they became familiar when the Boomer generation, with its accompanying seismic social changes, were redefining American culture and cuisine.

I met Sharon two years ago. She was bent over Virginia Woolf’s The Waves. We were waiting in the yard of a residential building in lower Manhattan for our tai chi class to begin. My brain froze with every instructed movement shift. Her bad knee gimped heroically in an effort to keep pace. I never went back. We spoke a bit afterwards. We discovered we both wrote poetry. She mentioned the magic name, Frank O’ Hara, and I felt a door open.
