702 Talk Radio
702 is a commercial FM radio station located in Johannesburg, South Africa, transmitting on FM 92.7 and FM 106 to serve the wider Gauteng region. It also streams live on its website. The station proudly positions itself as Johannesburg's leading news and talk radio, providing a mix of news, sports, business updates, and current affairs, along with engaging phone-in discussions. One of its highlights is the "Naked Scientist" segment, hosted by Dr. Chris Smith, who answers science-related questions every Friday morning. Founded in 1980, 702 originally started as a music station aimed at young adults but transitioned to a talk format in 1988. During the apartheid period in South Africa, it was one of the few independent sources of news, alongside Capital Radio 604. The station is under the ownership of Primedia. Before 2006, 702 was only available on the AM frequency of 702 kHz. In March 2006, it successfully applied to switch to FM, with its first FM broadcast occurring on July 24, 2006. It continued to broadcast on AM until June 28, 2007, when that service was discontinued. 702's sister station is CapeTalk, which operates as an AM radio station based in Cape Town.
