The 8K Association (8KA) is a non-profit organization (501(c)(6)) that welcomes any company interested in promoting the growth of the 8K ecosystem. Our strategy is guided by a Board of Directors, while various Work Groups and Committees work towards fulfilling our mission and objectives. The 8KA provides multiple membership tiers, and our current members include top consumer electronics brands, panel manufacturers, and other technology leaders involved in the 8K space.

NAB Panel Session IMAX "Futureproofing for 8K since 1972

At the NAB Show in Las Vegas in April 2025, the 8K Association hosted a panel session titled “8K Technology and its Emerging Role in the Creative Process”. After a brief introduction by Robin Raskin of Virtual Events Group which coordinated the events in the Creator Lab Theaters, 8K Association Executive Director Juan Reyes welcomed visitors. Reyes started by highlighting the growth in the ecosystem of capture, encoding, decoding and displays.

Grass Valley is not a company that we have focused on a lot as it is very clear that it is aiming at the broadcast market where 8K content is still limited. However, at NAB 2025, the company endorsed the point that the 8K Association has been making for some time, that even if your final deliverable is in 4K, capture in 8K can boost quality.

Will Narrow Bezels Enable Low Cost 8K OLED TVs?

The consumer press has got quite excited about a demonstration at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, when Samsung Display (the part of Samsung that makes display panels, rather than complete products) showed a demo of an OLED made up of tiles with narrow (0.6mm) bezels. These were put together to create a larger single display. Many have speculated that this will lead to cheaper large 8K OLED TVs. Well, there’s good news and there is bad news on this subject.

NHK implements VVC with video content layering - Looks at 8K VR Quality

NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) in Japan likes to tell the world about its developments and this week there were two interesting announcements. First, the organization has demonstrated how the VVC codec can be used to allow different layers to be delivered by broadcasters. This would mean that, for example, a sign language or with subtitles could be overlaid, reducing the need for multiple broadcast streams.
HDR10+ Now Streaming on Netflix

While not technically directly related to 8K spatial resolution, we spotted that Netflix announced on its TechBlog that has now added support for the HDR10+ dynamic metadata system. Although this feature is independent of the spatial resolution, the latest 8K TVs to be released are from Samsung which has supported the development of HDR10+, so 8K sets from the company will be able to get the advantage of this support.
An 8K display just 1.5mm wide?

An article in Nature describes a tiny – really tiny display made in a research lab in China that achieved a pixel size of down to 3.5 microns. That in itself is extremely impressive, but even more surprising is that the LEDs, made using perovskite materials, maintain high efficiency even at that small size. Conventional microLEDs tend to suffer from a very high drop of efficiency when going below 10 microns in edge size.
NVIDIA RTX 50 series vs RTX 40 series: what’s new for 8K?

In a bit of a deep dive, the 91 mobiles blog digs into some of the features of the Nvidia RTX 50 series GPUs which were announced at CES and which included DisplayPort 2.1 for the first time from the firm. The article clarifies that the output of the series supports DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 with up to 8K 165Hz using Display Stream Compression (DSC). The boards support Multi Frame Generation.
