The University of Maryland (UMD), DARPA, and the State of Maryland have launched a joint effort to evaluate quantum computing systems for national security and commercial applications. The Capital Quantum Benchmarking Hub will be based at UMD’s Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS). This undertaking is part of DARPA’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, which aims to verify whether any quantum computing approach can achieve an industrially useful quantum computer by 2033.

I think virtually everyone in HPC knows the Warewulf open source cluster provisioning and management tool. I wrote about Warewulf starting with Warewulf 3, followed by a series on Warewulf 4. Since the beginning of the Warewulf 4 series, Greg Kurtzer, the original developer of Warewulf, formed the company CIQ to develop and support many products, such as Rocky Linux and Fuzzball, but I’m focusing on Warewulf. As of the writing of this article (May 2025), Warewulf version 4.6.1 is current.

Varonis Systems has announced AI Shield, an AI risk defense tool that monitors how AI interacts with data and corrects permissions to prevent exposure of sensitive information. The service “monitors all AI prompts and responses for potential threats.
