The South Dakota State University Plant Diagnostic Clinic helps producers, gardeners and homeowners assess possible diseases in their plants. They test everything from crops to trees to garden produce. “We look mostly at plant diseases and figuring out what is killing the plants in the field,” said Madalyn Shires, SDSU plant pathology specialist and assistant professor.

The last big drought at Jorgensen Land and Cattle in Ideal, South Dakota, was in 2012. That spring was fairly normal. This spring is drier than at the same time that year. But Bryan Jorgensen, chief agronomy operations officer, knows that can change quickly in the spring. "This is normally when we get most of our moisture,” he said. South Dakota State Climatologist Laura Edwards said April is the tipping point to see if conditions will get worse, get better or hold steady in the drought conditions.

KASSON, Minn. — Make healthcare a priority. That was the message at the Rural Health Forum & Fair sponsored by Dodge County Public Health in cooperation with Dodge and Olmsted County Farmers Unions. Rodney Peterson, president of the Dodge County Farmers Union, said the event, which featured 14 vendors and two guest speakers, was the first of its kind. "We believe that there's a big need for our rural people to have better health decisions and health outcomes," Peterson said.
