AMC Outdoors Magazine
The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) holds the title of the oldest outdoor organization in the U.S., founded in 1876 to explore and protect the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Over the years, it has grown to include 12 chapters across the northeastern United States, from Maine all the way to Washington, D.C. With a community of 275,000 members, advocates, and supporters as of 2016, the AMC combines a passion for outdoor activities like hiking and backpacking with a commitment to environmental advocacy. Their offerings also include cross-country skiing, canoeing and kayaking in both calm and rushing waters, sea kayaking, sailing, rock climbing, and cycling. The organization is supported by around 2,700 volunteers who facilitate approximately 7,000 trips and activities each year. Additionally, the AMC publishes various books, guides, and trail maps for outdoor enthusiasts.

TALCOTT MOUNTAIN STATE PARK, CT. There’s a dense fog where a view of the Farmington Valley should be. But Jay Levy sees more. There’s the tree bark that continues to be used medicinally by the Mashantucket Pequot people.

This is what it feels like for the blind and visually impaired adventurers on a New England Ski for Light (NESFL) hike.

In September 2023 AMC’s Professional Trail Crew unveiled a trail unlike any they’d worked on. The Cardigan All Persons Trail (APT) at AMC Cardigan Lodge in New Hampshire is a half-mile-long path designed with all hikers in mind, including those who use wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, and more. APTs are built in accordance with Forest Service Accessible Trail Guidelines. This means the trail at Cardigan is wider than most in the White Mountains, with a smooth, consistent surface.

My son was asleep on my back, head craned sideways as he slouched in a child carrier, oblivious to the marathon journey in front of us. We were hiking up the Garfield Trail in the predawn darkness of August 2021, my headlamp lighting the rocky path, and his heavy breathing exchanging a rhythm with my crunching footsteps.
