The Bahamas Parliament has enacted the Port Authorities (Amendment) Bill, which will increase fees for visiting boats and introduce new regulations that carry penalties for infractions, effective July 1. Changes made in amending the Port Authorities Act include requiring AIS systems on boats over 50 feet, according to Bahamian government documents. The amendment also increases fees for temporary cruising permits, according to the Bahamian government.

Fly-fishing legend Bernard Victor “Lefty” Kreh passed away at his Cockeysville, Maryland, home surrounded by family on March 14, 2018. He was 93. Born in Frederick, Maryland, in 1925, Kreh reinvented the way fly anglers cast, pioneered the sport of saltwater fly-fishing and developed some of the most successful fly patterns ever tied. Kreh’s books, newspaper columns and magazine articles inspired generations of anglers, and his casting lessons taught thousands how to be better casters.

Escaping the dark, cold metropolises to which so many of us are tethered is necessary to the survival of our species. On such trips over the years, I’ve struggled to find expansive, easily accessible flats with as many bonefish as I cared to count.

Long-distance casting champion Ron Arra witnessed something he’d never seen before during a recent surfcasting demonstration on a beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The 79-year-old, five-time national distance champ watched as one of the participants, Lucas Leao, uncorked a cast that drained every inch of line from the spool of his Penn Spinfisher VII 5500 LC (long cast) reel, which held about 265 yards of 30-pound braid and backing. And then Leao did it three more times at the May 3 demonstration.
