Muttontown and Upper Brookville Police Department receives almost $1M grant

The Muttontown and Upper Brookville Police Departments will receive a $960,000 state grant for combining their departments in 2022. “It is, I understand, the largest award ever paid out under the shared service program, which I think was started in 2017, in Nassau County,” said Upper Brookville Mayor Elliot Conway. The Muttontown and Upper Brookville police departments combined forces two years ago. The state said the two villages saved $1.6 million in the program’s first year.
Syosset Woodbury chamber donates $5,000 to local nonprofits

The Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce presented checks for $2,500 to Tempo Group and the Children’s Orchestra Society, Syosset-based nonprofit organizations that assist children. “Over the course of the year, we raised funds that we agreed to split between the two of them,” said Russel Green, president of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce. Green said a chamber board member chose the two nonprofit organizations.
North Shore's 2025 valedictorian and salutatorian

Aaryan Vira and Kaitlin Ho have been named valedictorian and salutatorian of North Shore High School’s Class of 2025. Vira has the highest weighted grade point average in the class and Ho has the second-highest, district officials said. “Aaryan and Kaitlin are two exceptionally talented students,” said high school principal Eric Contreras in a press release.

The Syosset Dog Rescue Club raised $6,000 at its second annual Sabrina Navaretta Syosset H.S. Dog Rescue Walk-a-thon. The walk-a-thon was renamed after 19-year-old Syosset alum Sabrina Navaretta, who died last year. Sabrina was an active member of the school’s Dog Rescue Club and was a lifelong animal lover, her parents said. She was a Woodbury resident and attended the University of Delaware, where she died in a car accident.
Glen Cove's Amy Peters dies at 62

Glen Cove’s Amy Peters, founder of the Deep Roots Farmer’s Market, died at 62 this month of lung cancer. “The farmer’s market was Amy’s passion,” said Sharon Stillwagon, assistant manager of Deep Roots. Stillwagon worked alongside Peters for the past four years. “Amy wanted our community and surrounding communities to have an opportunity to buy fresh produce grown on Long Island,” she said. Stillwagon said Peters was incredibly dedicated to the market. “She worked so hard for this,” Stillwagon said.
