The annual RISE Life Services Ken-Ducky derby will return Saturday, June 7, from noon to 4 p.m. at 489 Sound Shore Road, in Riverhead. The funds raised will go towards RISE’s food pantries. “We’re going to have rubber duck races down at the duck pond. So that’s at 1 and 2 o’clock. With your entry, you receive a duck that gets entered into the race with a number,” said Grace Crowley, the fundraising and development manager at RISE. “And then we also have the Roadhouse Pizza truck there.

The 70th Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Festival will kick off another North Fork summer from June 11 to 15 at the Strawberry Fields Fairgrounds. This is the Lions’ main fundraiser for the year and has raised more than $1 million for local and national causes in its seven decades. “Every dollar we make is given right back to either the local community, or we give back to American Cancer Society,” said David Dominy, chairman of the festival.

Riverhead CAP will mark the culmination of its two-year Pulaski Street School drug prevention program with the 38th annual “Say No to Drugs” march at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 6, led by guest of honor New York Islander assistant captain Kyle Palmieri. The march starts at Pulaski Street School and heads south on Roanoke Avenue past the school. The Roanoke Avenue students will come out of their school to cheer on the Pulaski students.

In light of the national discussion of what should and shouldn’t be in the public water supply, local water quality is an ongoing concern for residents of the North Fork. Representatives from Suffolk County Water Authority, an independent corporation that filters, tests and supplies groundwater on the North Fork, visited the News-Review office recently to address the issue. There are approximately 45,000 private wells remaining in Suffolk County, serving around 200,000 people.

The East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation has tapped Erin Kimmel as their new director. According to EESM, Ms. Kimmel has worked locally on projects for The Water Mill Center, Stony Brook University, as well as globally recognized arts organizations like ArtForum and Ballroom Marfa. Earlier in her life, Ms. Kimmel spent time in Texas, California and South Carolina. Though she comes from a varied background geographically, she connected deeply with her adopted Long Island home.
