Starting at 11 a.m. on June 28 at the North Austin branch of the Chicago Public Library, Thomas is launching an updated version of Books Not Bullets – programming designed to make reading more engaging for kids.

Last year, 41 people were shot in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend. Ten were fatal shootings, according to the city’s violence reduction dashboard. And ten of those people were shot in either Austin or North Lawndale, with one fatality in Austin and three in North Lawndale. Chicago’s West Side is attempting to get that number to zero this year, and spoken word poet Kweisi Gharreau is helping with the effort.

North Lawndale will be the site on May 17 of the fifth annual Bike Out Negativity, a free, anti-violence bike ride and youth celebration organized by Boxing Out Negativity. The free, family-friendly event will begin at 12 noon with an Impact Expo showcasing local organizations, followed by a six-mile community bike ride at 3 p.m. starting across from St. Agatha Catholic Church, 3147 W. Douglas Blvd, Chicago. The event is expected to draw several hundred people.

Root2Fruit Youth Foundation led a youth-driven effort at Austin Town Hall, where they cleaned the park, planted trees and created a safer space, all while encouraging the community to pledge support for their Protect Our Hood initiative on April 26. The Protect Our Hood project fosters unity in Austin through youth-led beautification and a community code of shared values.

On April 30, community members and students planted trees at St. Angela School in Austin. The event at St. Angela’s marked the end of an eight-week TreeKeepers course for Chicago’s West Side put on by Openlands, a nonprofit aiming to conserve nature. Five Treekeepers from Austin graduated from the course: Mary Gardner, Crystal Gardner, Aniki Coates, Candice Santos and Chicago First Lady Stacie Johnson.
