Preservation Chicago last week announced its annual Chicago 7 list, identifying the city’s most endangered historic buildings. Prominent on the list is the only home designed on the West Side by Frank Lloyd Wright. The future of the dilapidated home is precarious. Since 2003 the non-profit group, which advocates for historic preservation, has sounded the alarm on local historic buildings that are in danger of being lost.

In the early 1900’s the near-west suburbs of Chicago were a hotbed of architectural innovation. Young Frank Lloyd Wright was designing homes in and around his Home and Studio in Oak Park and his studio nurtured the talents of many prominent architects and designers. One of Wright’s grandest designs, the Avery Coonley House in Riverside, sparked more Prairie Style buildings in the suburbs. Built between 1908 and 1912, the estate is just one of three multi-building complexes built by Wright.

The J.J. Walser House at 42 N. Central Ave. in Austin is in need of a savior. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1903, the home is an early example of Wright’s Prairie Style. The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy is working with members of the Austin community to save the house and ensure its survival. Designed for printing company executive Jospeh Jacob Walser, the home is one of only five existing Wright-designed Prairie structures in Chicago.
