Since forming in 2021 this US death metal act has released a demo, split and EP in quick succession as this marks the band’s first, and hopefully not the last, full length. You rarely get to hear a straight up death metal album these days due to many of the acts adding technical or progressive touches and even adding cleaner vocals much to chagrin of old school death fans.

This is the fifth album by Germany’s Chaos Invocation who I was introduced to on their second album ‘Black Mirror Hours’ and reviewed for the site back in 2013. I have kept up with the band since as each subsequent album has been a textbook demonstration in blackened death metal and this latest album is no different.

It’s been a while since we heard from Time Lurker and multi-instrumentalist Mick. The last release was a split EP with Cepheide in 2019 but now he is back from journeying through the space time continuum with second album ‘Emprise’. The cover-art gives the impression that this is going to make your head explode or at the very least disintegrate and as with the last couple of tracks we heard, one expects an atmospheric multi-layered assault of burgeoning darkness.

First on are German group Hiraes all of the musicians from whom sprung out of Dawn Of Disease after they called it a day back in 2020. With two albums to their name including most recent ‘Dominant’ they may not have had a huge amount of time on their hands to impress us but to say they took to the ground running would not be an understatement. Forceful and bombastic their brand of melodic death metal is fired out at full force. Guitar sound is choppy and bass nice and thick.

Time to dip into a world of “plague, diseases, and strange afflictions” and although centred musically via the format of medieval sound, the narrative here is linked to the present satirically and more recent viral concerns. The members of these troubadours reside in other underground French acts such as Véhémence, Hanternoz, Cantique Lépreux, & Passéisme and they have become known for their work eschewing all modern forms of instrumentation.

This is classic US death metal, a new release consisting of Kam Lee, vocalist and basic innovator of death metal vocals, in fact the same stable line up since 2021’s ‘Resurgeance’ release. Those who following the Swedish death metal scene will note once again Rogga Johnasson is present who is a true leading force of death metal over the last decade and “from beyond” (SIC!) maybe?

I have stated before in reviews on this estimable site that I believe music and the enjoyment of it is situational. In the same way the fact that you arrive home in your beaten up car at midnight after a four-hour drive screaming along to Under the Sign of the black Mark at the top of your lungs does not mean that you greet Quorthon with the same glee when you turn your ignition the following morning at 6:30 am. Well maybe you do.
