Good luck to anyone trying to keep up with Spider God as G their arachnid muse never stops spinning his musical web. Since 2020 there have been a staggering 26 releases (according to Metal Archives) of varying lengths and types and there is some serious creativity behind the project.

It’s been a while since we heard from Time Lurker and multi-instrumentalist Mick. The last release was a split EP with Cepheide in 2019 but now he is back from journeying through the space time continuum with second album ‘Emprise’. The cover-art gives the impression that this is going to make your head explode or at the very least disintegrate and as with the last couple of tracks we heard, one expects an atmospheric multi-layered assault of burgeoning darkness.

First on are German group Hiraes all of the musicians from whom sprung out of Dawn Of Disease after they called it a day back in 2020. With two albums to their name including most recent ‘Dominant’ they may not have had a huge amount of time on their hands to impress us but to say they took to the ground running would not be an understatement. Forceful and bombastic their brand of melodic death metal is fired out at full force. Guitar sound is choppy and bass nice and thick.

Time to dip into a world of “plague, diseases, and strange afflictions” and although centred musically via the format of medieval sound, the narrative here is linked to the present satirically and more recent viral concerns. The members of these troubadours reside in other underground French acts such as Véhémence, Hanternoz, Cantique Lépreux, & Passéisme and they have become known for their work eschewing all modern forms of instrumentation.

To say the announcement on the signing of Nachtmystium was met with howls of vitriol and derision by a significant amount of people is no overstatement. Perhaps the somewhat cynical and attention seeking way Prophecy Productions made it along with a video for new track ‘Predator Phoenix’ didn’t help things. It contained many quotes from disgruntled (ex) fans who had been historically burned by scammer Blake Judd, “Snotpissium can eat the shit from my hairy asshole” being one such striking comment.

It’s not often we get music from Georgia to review and even rarer that bands from the country come to play here live. I was caught napping when Psychonaut 4 popped over to perform a show on route to a festival in Mexico as I didn’t realise just how popular they were and cursed as it sold out. Luckily managing to procure a spare just hours before the gig I found their brand of depressive blackness and dark rock an absolutely entrancing experience.

Fancy something spooky and symphonic for Halloween? Well this will do nicely. Dutch band Haliphron only rose from their graves in 2021 and have in their ranks various members past and present from Bleeding Gods, Isegrim, Sinister, Howitzer, Debauchery and Asagraum (live). Debut album ‘Prey’ only came out a year and a half ago and the band have been busily establishing themselves with support slots with Arch Enemy and festivals including a packed throng at UK’s Bloodstock.
