BirGün

BirGün

BirGün, translating to "One Day," is a daily newspaper based in Istanbul, Turkey, with a left-wing perspective. Founded in 2004 by a collective of Turkish intellectuals, it stands out because it is independent and not linked to any large media conglomerate. Since its inception, BirGün has faced significant challenges from major publishing groups, particularly those associated with the Doğan Media Group, which dominates much of the Turkish media landscape. Unlike many other newspapers in Turkey that can pay their printing and publishing costs in installments, BirGün has always been required to pay upfront. To manage these expenses, the newspaper initiated a subscription drive and increased its price gradually, starting at 0.75 TL, moving to 1 TL in 2012, and then to 1.5 TL in the summer of 2015. It also offers a discounted price of 40 kuruş (0.4 TL) for students at universities in Turkey. The newspaper's columns are often written by individuals who are either members of or sympathetic to the socialist Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP), which is affiliated with the Party of the European Left and is a founding member of the European Anti-Capitalist Left.
