Black Mountain News is a weekly publication located in Black Mountain, North Carolina. It was established in 1945 by James Clarence Cornelius along with his brother-in-law, John Ealy, who hailed from Indianapolis, Indiana. Eventually, the newspaper was acquired by Gordon Greenwood.

Sister-Corps, an all-woman volunteer organization, was formed in 2017 to respond to Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Sister-Corps will be coming to Black Mountain May 14 for 10 days to help with Tropical Storm Helene recovery efforts at the Black Mountain Home for Children. In 2017, Leeann Moore and Sherry Gibbons set out to help those in Texas impacted by Hurricane Harvey. These efforts later came together to form a new nonprofit, now known as Sister-Corps.

Black Mountain-based radio station The Bear has rebranded as Bigfoot Country. A spokesperson for the station said the change was due to a drop in advertisements after Tropical Storm Helene. Two years after classic country radio station The Bear debuted in Black Mountain in 2023, the station is rebranding as Bigfoot Country. Station spokesperson Sal Campo said this rebranding is largely due to the impact Tropical Storm Helene had on the station. “Helene hurt us,” Campo said.

Defiance Cafe has opened in Swannanoa with lunch service at 2288 U.S. 70. Owner Chaney Harrison has been in the Air Force and reserves for 21 years. Harrison worked in COVID relief efforts in New York and Tropical Storm Helene relief efforts in Western North Carolina. Chaney Harrison and his wife Dana had planned to open a new food trailer in Swannanoa in the fall of 2024.

The Black Mountain Tailgate Markets runs from 9 a.m.-noon every Saturday from May 3 to Nov. 22. The market has acquired nonprofit status. A GoFundMe has raised more than $37,000. The Black Mountain Tailgate Market, now in its 31st season, has recently acquired 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and has reorganized its board as a result, according to Board President Kiersten Hall.
