This summer, members of the Green Party of England and Wales will be voting to elect new leaders and deputy leaders. It’s the first election for the party’s leaders since 2021, and the first for deputy leaders since 2022. Politics in Britain has changed a lot since then. So too has the Green Party. The number of Green Party members has grown to more than 60,000. There are now four Green MPs and hundreds more Councillors.

More than 10,000 people have signed a petition calling for the government to take Britain’s trains into public ownership. The petition, hosted by anti-privatisation group We Own It, acknowledges that the government is in the process of taking the rail operators into public ownership (ie. the companies that run the services), but that under the government’s plans the trains themselves will remain privately owned. More than 30,000 people have signed a petition calling for the UK government to introduce a path for Ukrainians to obtain settled status in the UK. The petition reads: “We urge the UK government to provide a path to settlement for Ukrainians living in the UK. These individuals face significant uncertainty about their future.

It’s a crowded field in this year’s election for the deputy leadership of the Green Party. Yesterday (June 11), another candidate threw their hat into the ring, as Rachel Millward announced she’s standing for the role. Millward is currently the co-leader of Wealden District Council. Since taking on that role, she’s developed a reputation as an effective media performer, being a regular guest on regional BBC political programming.

A flurry of candidates for the deputy leadership of the Green Party have started to announce. The fourth candidate to enter the race was Ani Townsend, who announced their intention to stand on 9 June. Townsend has been a councillor in Bristol since 2015. In the 2024 general election, they stood for the Greens in the Bristol East constituency coming second to Labour and picking up 31 per cent of the vote.
