PHNOM PENH – Rice, corn and beans will be abundant in the upcoming farming season, the Royal Palace’s Brahman priest predicted at the Royal Ploughing Ceremony on May 15. The prediction was based on the feed of the sacred oxen. King Norodom Sihamoni presided over the annual ceremony, one of the most important events in the country, in Kampong Chhnang province. The event also marked the start of the rice planting season.

PHNOM PENH – Two Cambodian troops have died on a peacekeeping mission in war-torn South Sudan. Defense Minister Tea Seiha said in a Facebook post on May 14 that Doung Magaly and Phat Muny had been performing their duties in Malakal city. They were part of a military police squadron sent by Cambodia. Seiha did not elaborate on the cause of the deaths.

PHNOM PENH – A Chinese amphibious warship arrived at Cambodia’s Ream Naval Base on May 12 ahead of a joint military exercise set to begin later in the week. The Changbai Shan, a Type 071 amphibious landing ship, is leading China’s mission for the annual Golden Dragon exercises. The vessel is commanded by Rear Admiral Lyu Guankun, assistant chief of the joint staff at the Chinese military’s Southern Theater Command.

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s negotiating team led by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol has pledged to defend the country’s interest in the upcoming talks with the United States over the U.S. tariff hike, the talks to also include non-tariff issues. The 19-member delegation departed on May 10 for the three-day meeting taking place in Washington, D.C., on May 13 through 15. The two sides have already met virtually once in April and once early May.

PHNOM PENH – Senate President Hun Sen was driven to his hotel in Dili by Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos Horta upon his arrival in the capital for an official visit on May 7. Horta personally welcomed Hun Sen at the airport along with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. Hun Sen arrived in Timor-Leste after his visit to Indonesia. “A good friend, a best friend, visits us,” Horta wrote in a Facebook post. He is expected to hold talk with Horta, Gusmao and President of Parliament Maria Fernanda Lay.
