Colorado’s congressional and local leaders are responding to a proposed budget reconciliation bill that proposes making more than 250 million acres of public lands eligible for sale. The Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee (SENR) budget reconciliation bill proposed by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), released June 11 and updated June 14, would force the sale of at least two million acres of U.S. Forest Service lands and Bureau of Land Management lands in 11 western states over the next five years.
BVPD arrests two after executing search warrant

The Buena Vista Police Department and the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on June 18 that resulted in the arrests of Cameron Gordanier and Christina Hussey. According to a June 19 press release, BVPD officers had been investigating leads that two wanted felons were hiding at 115 Hill Street in Buena Vista and obtained the search warrant.
Like a clown in a barrel: Rodeo icon celebrates 18 years with Stampede

As rodeo bulls stamp and snort, bucking their riders as they burst into the arena, a bright red barrel stands in the middle of it all, bearing a crucial member of the safety team: the rodeo clown. He’s easy to spot in and out of the arena as he chats with rodeo fans and trades commentary with the emcee. At the Collegiate Peaks Stampede, the rodeo clown is decked out in signature blue overalls, a red shirt and a comically large blue 50-gallon foam hat.

Upper Ark Wilderness Volunteers prepare for summer work

The Upper Ark Wilderness Volunteers gathered near the South Cottonwood Trailhead of the Colorado Trail on June 7, equipped with saws and earth-movers as they prepared to train new volunteers in limbing, water erosion work and more. The group was formed in 2012 as a subchapter of the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association. UAWV volunteers give their time to check trail conditions, clear fallen and encroaching trees and limbs and regrade water runoff paths on trails.
School board moves 2026 graduation after Memorial Day

The BV Board of Education voted to move Buena Vista High School’s graduation to May 30 for the 2025-26 school year during their June 10 meeting. The 2024-25 and 2025-26 calendars approved by the board in March 2025 scheduled graduation on the usual Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The calendars also extended the school year beyond Memorial Day for students, accommodating additional days off during the school year.
Friends of Browns Canyon gather in support of public lands

Friends of Browns Canyon, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, conserving and enhancing the natural and cultural resources of the Browns Canyon area, held a dark sky and stargazing event June 7 that drew dozens to the Ruby Mountain recreation area. June 7 was also a National Monument Day of Action, organized by Monuments for All, ahead of the 119th anniversary of the Antiquities Act (June 8, 1906).
Chaffee County’s Nerds take 7th at Destination Imagination Globals

The Nerds, a team of Chaffee County kids, returned from Destination Imagination Globals with a top-ten finish in May after taking first place at State in April. Danielle Leuenberger, River Miller and Ruby Henriquez competed in Kansas City, giving a performance about the digestive system based on “The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,” featuring hand-made puppets, a papier mache set and a transportation device.
Boater dies after capsizing on Arkansas River near Buena Vista June 6

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) rangers responded to a call of CPR in progress after two packrafts capsized near Buena Vista on June 6, causing one fatality. Ethan Sandoval, 35, of Arizona died after capsizing in an inflatable packraft on the Arkansas River near Buena Vista. A June 7 press release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife reported that Sandoval and a friend both capsized their inflatable packrafts.
Collegiate Peaks Stampede barrels into town June 14, 15

The 2025 Collegiate Peaks Stampede Rodeo will ride into the Buena Vista Rodeo Grounds on June 14 and 15 this summer. “We are beginning to build the Collegiate Peaks Stampede Rodeo into a new standard, while maintaining the western heritage of the event we all love,” said Dan Nachtrieb, CPSR board president. “It’s important to us to pass on the western values of the rodeo.
