Community book club on ‘The Anxious Generation’ set for Apr. 24

Chaffee County Public Health, the Town of Buena Vista and The Book Club Salida are teaming up to host an April 24 book club event on “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt. Haidt’s book covers the mental health crisis affecting today’s youth, the impacts of social media and smartphones and the importance of imaginative play. Emily Anderson, deputy director of CCPH, says the inspiration for the book club was twofold.
HPC hears Pearl update, considers education on preservation

The Historic Preservation Commission further discussed the Pearl Theater during their monthly meeting on April 2. HPC Chair Mary Therese Anstey sent a summary of the court hearing on March 26 to the rest of the commission. The Groy family, which owns the theater, was granted a continuance to the May court date.
Kira Jones confirmed as Chaffee County Fire chief

The Chaffee County Fire Protection District board of directors confirmed Kira Jones as the new fire chief during a regular meeting on April 3. Jones has been with CCFPD since 2014, where her husband was also a volunteer. While she started her career with the district in an administrative role, she soon joined the firefighting team and later became an EMT in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m really excited about growing the district,” she said.

Shortly after the Times reported that Kira Jones had been named the new Fire Chief for the Chaffee County Fire Protection District, former CCFPD interim chief and firefighter Kent Maxwell sent an email to the Times, other news outlets and staff from the Town of Buena Vista, City of Salida, Town of Poncha Springs and Chaffee County governments. Maxwell alleged “a deliberate violation of Colorado Sunshine/Open Meeting Law” by the CCFPD board.

The Buena Vista High School Track & Field Team made the trip to Eagle Valley on April 5 to compete in the Eagle Valley Invitational. Head coach Quincey Troudt and the coaching team watched last week’s weather leading up to their original Apr. 5 meet in Salida. “We had a feeling that, ‘If this storm does hit, this meet is going to be canceled,’” she said. “We were able to find the Eagle Valley Invitational in Gypsum early on … and they were more than happy to let us join them.
Demons, Spartans split double-header 1-1

The Buena Vista Demons battled hometown rivals, the Salida Spartans, in a doubleheader on Apr. 7, splitting the games 1-1. The Demons narrowly defeated the Spartans in Game 1, finishing 8-7 after a tie-breaking run in the final inning. Oakley Robison scored a run, had three hits in four plate appearances and snagged 3 RBIs. Knox Reid went two-for-three with four RBIs, two doubles and a run. Logan Scott also scored three times for the Demons, and Hudson Wingo had his first hit of the season.
