Chatham University’s hockey teams may finally be able to call the Shadyside ice rink, the Hunt Armory, home for good. Following a unanimous approval vote from the Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) on April 10, Chatham University has been approved for a 10-year lease with the option to buy the property for $2 million. “It’s great news,” Women’s Ice Hockey Coach Michael O’Grady said.

From captaining the women’s hockey team in the morning to stopping lacrosse shots at night, Samantha Barrett’s ‘25 time at Chatham University continues to keep her busy. Barrett is a two-sport athlete playing for the women’s hockey and lacrosse teams, and while her role on the ice and field differs for each team, her leadership is her most impactful asset. Barrett played in more than 100 games for the women’s hockey team and was named the captain for her senior year.

February 27, 2025 The men’s basketball team is looking to do something no other Chatham University team has before: win its third Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championship. In its ninth season, the men’s basketball team already has a rich history. The Cougars have won two titles since 2019, and for the first time in program history, they are the top-ranked team in the playoffs. “We’re very pleased with how the regular season went,” head coach David Richards said.

Athletic Alley aims to help all of Chatham community

Chatham University announced in a campus-wide email on Feb. 7 the opening of Athletic Alley at Chatham Eastside starting in the fall 2025 semester, along with the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling and competitive cheerleading the following year. Athletic Alley will be a gym where Chatham athletic teams will work out, alleviating the current crowding at the Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC).

Aurielle Brunner ‘25 is the most decorated Chatham University athlete of all time. She is a five-time All-American and Presidents’ Athletic Champion – and now, she has her sights on a national championship. Brunner notched her fourth and fifth All-American honors at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the heptathlon and triple jump. She is the first Chatham athlete to garner an All-American title, and she wants to be the first Cougar to be named a national champion, too.

The Chair of Chatham University’s Board of Trustees Kent McElhattan shared his intent in a recent email to increase the Board’s transparency. The email was prompted by Chatham Student Government’s (CSG) fall town hall and a Communiqué opinion piece. In his 436-word email sent Jan. 14, McElhattan wrote that beginning at the Board’s next meeting on Feb. 14, he will share updates via email to the Chatham community.

Ryan Miller ‘25 came to Chatham University hoping to continue his lifelong dream of playing hockey, but after his on-ice career ended, he found a path to keep hockey in his life forever. Miller is the hockey operations intern for the Chatham men’s ice hockey team. The soon-to-be graduate is working on parlaying his work with the Cougars into a job in hockey after graduation. Miller spends about eight hours working on game days, and his presence on staff is a huge advantage and luxury for the team.
