CHMT-FM is a radio station located in Timmins, Ontario, operating at a frequency of 93.1 FM. It offers a classic hits music format and is known as Moose FM. Originally owned by Haliburton Broadcasting Group, the station has since been acquired by Vista Radio. The CRTC granted a license to Haliburton Broadcasting Group in February 2001 to establish a new English-language commercial FM radio station in Timmins, Ontario.

April 22nd is Earth Day every year – that’s next Tuesday this year – and the city of Timmins is marking it by offering free bus rides on Timmins Transit. Earth Day focusses on ways we can all contribute to improving the environment. City Hall says riding the bus instead of driving a car reduces emissions of greenhouse gases per passenger. It also lowers overall energy consumption and saves fuel, reducing the demand for fossil fuels.

Despite the forecast of up to 12 ccm of new snow by sometime Tuesday, temperatures above the freezing mark will keep the spring melt going. The Timmins Flood Advisory Committee says flooding in not anticipated yet along local water courses, but it’s still early and that could change. So it’s advising against going out on any lakes, rivers and streams, and especially to keep your kids away.

Over the next few weeks in our Timmins history feature, we’ll learn about some colourful characters from the mining camp’s past, with local historian Karen Bachmann. “And boy, are there a lot of them to pick from,” she says. We begin with an early prospector who didn’t make huge discoveries, but did leave a mark. Johnny Jones arrived in 1921. He actually took the train from Toronto to Cochrane, upon hearing of three American balloonists who were lost in the bush in the James Bay area.

The provincial cabinet minister now in charge of mines says he’ll be drawing a lot on the experience and knowledge of his predecessor. Stephen Lecce was given mines as part of his portfolio along with energy, while Timmins MPP George Pirie was named northern economic development and growth minister. Lecce says Premier Doug Ford designed things so that his ministry will secure energy while Pirie will secure “the prosperity corridor”.

The season is over for the Timmins Snowmobile Club. Its trails are closed as of last night at midnight, and grooming operations are over. The club advises that using the trails as snow and ice conditions deteriorate in the spring weather is extremely hazardous. Communications director Gilbert Fortin says the only sensible course of action is put away your sleds until next winter.
