Nostalgia was not uncommon in Cochrane last week, when the former Legion Hall on Second Ave. caught fire. Our local history feature this week looks back. Roy Mitchell wrote a brief history of the Branch 89 Hall that appeared in the Cochrane Times in November, 1999. The original Legion hall was in a converted judge’s house on Sixth Avenue. It became the Legion Hall in June, 1949. The 107 Second Ave.

In the midst of celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, our local history feature is about one way Timmins contributed to the war effort. Local historian Karen Bachmann notes that the Battle of the Atlantic lasted the entire duration of the war, from 1939 to 45. The Germans and the Allies were sinking each other’s supply ships. Britain brought in lightly-armored Corvettes to escort supply ships. They were able to sink German submarines by using depth charges.

Frank Louvelle has handed over the presidency of the Cochrane Board of Trade to Daniel Brunet, sold Wallace Drug Store, and moved to Orillia. Louvelle says he’ll be back whenever his help is needed at the drug store. “It’s been a real pleasure to be here over the years and it’s been an honour to represent the Board of Trade as the president for the past, I think about four years now, seems about that,” he remarks. “ I’m not exactly sure of the timeline.

Sports and teamwork made up the theme Thursday night for the 23rd annual Timmins Chamber of Commerce Nova business awards. Fittingly, the event was at the McIntyre Arena. The most prestigious of the 16 categories is the President’s Award. It went to Daystar Stitching, a business that deals in imprinted and embroidered clothing and promotional products. Chamber president Tom Faught Jr. said Daystar stands out in all requirements to be nominated, including community contributions and innovation.

One-hundred-and-33 Catholic Cardinals have elected a new Pope – the first American to hold the post. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago will be known as Pope Leo XIV. His election by a majority of at least two-thirds of the votes cast defies the conventional wisdom before the conclave, that any American would be a long shot to become pontiff. He’s also relatively young, at 69 years old.
