New features are coming to Del Villano Park in the south end of Ward 5, including a cricket pitch, pickleball courts and more tennis courts. Approval has been given by city council to spend $352,000  for engineering design. Construction is expected to begin in August or September and be completed this year. Community services director Steph Palmateer told council the baseball field won’t be affected. A new washroom will be built elsewhere in the park to make way for the cricket pitch.

You’ll have one more thing to vote for on the ballot for the November, 2026 municipal election. Timmins council has unanimously approved a question regarding the ward system being put to the electorate. City clerk Steph Palmateer says it will be very straightforward: “Do you support changing the current Ward System for electing members of Council? Yes or No.”“This does not commit the council to any option or any type of anything,” he told the existing council.

Iroquois Falls is getting $125,916  for its airport from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. At the airport Wednesday, northern economic growth and development minister George Pirie said it’s for installation of jet fuel tanks and a new hangar door. Pirie says the government has been trying, ever since Resolute Forest Products shut down its newsprint mill in 2014, to help Iroquois Falls. It attempted to convert it to a cardboard mill, but the municipality had other plans.

The ribbon has been cut on the new location of the multicultural centre in Timmins, which also has a new name. It’s now at 85 Pine St. S., under the banner of the Northeastern Ontario Multicultural Centre. Executive director Deborah Robertson says the new name better reflects the scope of the area it serves with settlement services for immigrants. “Anyone born outside of Canada can come in and access our services,” she explains.

Cochrane town council has declared a food insecurity emergency, and food bank manager Ardis Proulx hopes municipalities from Hearst to Kirkland Lake follow suit. She says the idea comes from Feed Ontario, which thinks it’s a good way to advocate for resources from government and to get people talking. “By doing that, it doesn’t make this big grandioso gesture,” she says.
