The Charity Commission has today updated its guidance for charities recruiting trustees, with an expanded section on inducting new recruits. Its revised CC30 guidance focuses on steps that charities can take to connect with a broader range of candidates, and to remove barriers that may deter potential trustees from applying.
Sector umbrella body announces redundancies in bid to close £500,000 deficit

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has placed 17 staff members at risk of redundancy in a bid to close a budget deficit of half a million pounds. SCVO’s publication Third Force News (TFN) yesterday published an article confirming the plans, to which the umbrella body’s board have agreed as part of a restructure. A voluntary redundancy process had already been opened up in February in an initial attempt for the organisation to close its budget deficit.
Regulator intervenes as ‘major issues’ raised about rehabilitation charity

Scottish charity regulator OSCR has intervened after concerns indicating “major issues” were raised last year about a rehabilitation charity’s governance and financial management. OSCR received concerns from a funder of the Jericho Benedictine Society in September 2024 that the charity faced acute financial issues and was in danger of collapse.

Eating disorder charity, Beat, has announced the appointment of Vanessa Longley as its new CEO. Longley joins Beat with extensive leadership experience in mental health and youth sectors; most recently as chief executive of early intervention charity Chance UK. She will be taking over from interim chief executive Robin Hepburn and will officially assume her new role on Monday 16 June 2025.
Affluent London areas ‘least generous’ in UK, CAF research finds

The 10 least generous areas in the UK are all districts in London, according to new research, while residents in affluent suburbs outside the capital give more of their money to charities. A report published today by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) says that British people give 1.1% of their disposable income to charities on average but those in the least generous area, Kensington and Bayswater, donate less than half this proportion (0.5%).

Large charities have been encouraged to focus on shifting power towards local communities in order to remain relevant. Lloyds Bank Foundation chief executive Matt Hyde told an event yesterday that larger charities should consider operating “less like a big, monolithic machine that’s focused on numbers”. Instead, Hyde said large charity leaders should think about they can “convert” their organisations to be to be “more like a movement and more like a network”.

As far as I can see, the main argument in favour of maintaining the voluntary principle of trusteeship, put about by the Charity Commission and others, seems to be that paying trustees would negatively impact public trust and confidence in the sector; that it would damage the “social contract” between charities and the donating, volunteering public. But something about this argument doesn’t stack up. We all know that public perceptions of charities are so far divorced from reality as to be absurd.
Award-winning former charity director pleads guilty to £860,000 fraud

A charity director who previously won an award for her cross-community work in Northern Ireland pleaded guilty to fraud charges involving a sum of over £860,000. Wendy McBean had initially denied all 25 charges of fraud against her, but on 7 May, entered guilty pleas for eight of the charges, involving a sum of £862,574. The Irish News reported that 17 other similar charges remain on the bill of indictment and are the subject of discussions between the prosecution and McBean’s defence team.
Property sales blocked at Liverpool charity as investigation opens

The Charity Commission has announced that it has opened a statutory inquiry into a Liverpool-based charity and issued an order to prevent its property from being sold. CG Community Council was established in the 1960s to support the education, health and leisure time of local people in the Liverpool areas of Croxteth and Gillmoss.
