We have officially started hurricane season with the first named “storm” of the year, even though it was not a major disturbance. The National Hurricane Center tracked the area of low pressure that became Andrea for two days, but the storm struggled to organize at first. An increase in persistent thunderstorm activity near the center of that low allowed the NHC to deem it the first Atlantic tropical storm of 2025.

There are reports that a 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred last night near 10pm. The epicenter was approximately 225km south of Nova Scotia with the closest location being East Lawrencetown in the HRM. I don’t know much about earthquakes since we very seldom deal with them locally so I looked up the magnitude scale: Earthquake Magnitude ScaleMagnitudeEarthquake EffectsEstimated Number Each Year2.5 or lessUsually not felt, but can be recorded by seismograph.

Elbows Up! This summer, the Government of Canada is offering the Canada Strong Pass. This will grant you free or discounted admissions to various tourist destinations across the country from June 20 to September 2. The best part? This isn’t a physical pass that you need to purchase, sign up for, or collect. All you need to do is visit any participating Parks Canada site, museum, gallery or VIA Rail to benefit from free admissions or discounts.

This weekend there is a great event at the South Shore Exhibition grounds raising funds for a very important cause. The Ride For The Ribbon celebrates 10 years June 21 & 22. It’s a fun show for riders, horses and horse lovers alike and it is free for spectators to be there. I had the chance to talk with the two sisters behind this fundraiser event that has already collected over $35,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, looking to grow that total this weekend.
