After dropping to historic levels last year due to ongoing drought and high temperatures, hydropower generated in the Northwest is expected to rise slightly this year from much needed precipitation. Hydropower in the region is expected to increase about 17% compared to last year, a welcome boost to growing energy demand, but will still be below the 10-year average, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The back yard burning season ends this weekend in Lane County. The ban takes effect at midnight, Saturday June 7. Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Unit Forester John Flannigan said the decision by the Lane County Fire Defense Board (LCFDB), ODF Eastern and Western Lane Divisions, and the Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority (LRAPA) is to end back yard debris burning for the season as a wildfire precaution step.

A state agency is issuing a safety advisory to anyone using stand up paddleboards at Oregon waterways this spring and summer. The Oregon State Marine Board is urging people who recreate on stand up paddleboards (SUPs) atop moving water (primarily rivers) to always wear a life jacket and never wear a Velcro ankle or leg leash that is designed for general flatwater use or the surf zone.

The Bureau of Land Management (BKM) has sold 12.9 million board feet of timber across 324 public acres to Freres Engineered Wood of Lyons during the Green Stone timber sale. The sale generated $5,851,592 in revenue, according to the BLM. "This project will produce enough timber to build roughly 800 homes, feed local mills, and support jobs in western Oregon communities," The BLM states in a release.
Lame County man stabbed eight times, suspect arrested, convicted

A suspect has been convicted and sentenced following an unprovoked knife attack that sent a Lane County man to the hospital with eight stab wounds. Law enforcement responded to a report of a stabbing at approximately 1:45 a.m. Jan. 26, at the Jackson Market on 7th Avenue in Eugene. The subsequent investigation found that Nicholas Arnold had stabbed the victim eight times as the victim was seated on a chair in 8th Alley.
River Rescue: One person rescued after car plunges into river

Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) responded to a vehicle in the water in the Willamette River near Beltline Road in Eugene Sunday afternoon, June 1. ESF crews were notified of the call just after 1:30 p.m."Callers reported that a vehicle had accelerated into the river with a woman trapped inside as the vehicle floated away," a ESF release states. Ladder 11 responded from ESF’s Santa Clara station and Boat 5 from the Gateway station.
