The Creston Valley Advance is a weekly newspaper located in southeastern British Columbia. Originally launched in 1948 by Alex Carruthers under the name Valley Advert, it was published twice a week until 2003. Since then, it has been a weekly publication that caters to the communities of Creston, Erickson, Lister, Canyon, Yahk, West Creston, and Wynndel, along with the East Shore of Kootenay Lake.

BC Ferries adding over 1,000 round trips for busy summer season

With the Victoria Day long weekend just around the corner, BC Ferries says they are “summer ready.” The company anticipates carrying over 9 million passengers and nearly 4 million vehicles over the summer season, building upon last year's record-breaking numbers between May 15 and Sept. 2, 2024. “We’re operating in a more complex environment – aging ships, increased demand, and busy terminals all put pressure on the system,” said Stephen Jones, vice-president of engineering.

After nearly four years of growing a tight-knit fitness community in Creston, Iron Soul Fitness is moving out of the basement and opening a new door. Gym co-owners Jordana Champagne and Brent Evans are expanding both their space and their services after taking over the old fire hall building. The couple first launched Iron Soul in April 2021, offering boot camps in Centennial Park during the pandemic. By September of that year, the gym had opened its first brick-and-mortar location.
Man apprehended under Mental Health Act in downtown Fernie

Updated Elk Valley RCMP apprehended a man in distress in downtown Fernie on May 8. Police intercepted a 48-year-old man, after receiving a report that he was en route to the Elk Valley Hospital with a firearm in his possession, threatening to shoot himself. Four years ago, Saanich resident Terry Smollett picked up a copy of the Saanich News and sat down to read. Turning through the pages, he made a perplexing discovery when he came across a photo of a plant all too familiar – one that was sprawling across his own backyard. The article revealed that the lush broad-leafed plant, producing bright orange-red, berry-laden cobs, was actually a non-native weed considered to be both toxic and “highly” invasive.

They had her abuser in custody but were preparing to release him, so Maskerine packed a bag and rode in the back of a police car to the shelter. It's difficult to be anonymous in Sioux Lookout, the town Maskerine grew up in.

CBT supports accessibility projects in Kootenay communities

Accessibility improvements are coming Kootenay recreation facilities thanks to funding support from the Columbia Basin Trust. In Cranbrook, $26,000 is being earmarked for installing a pool access ramp and two portable pool lifts at Western Financial Place Aquatics Centre, while in Creston, $50,000 is going towards enhancing accessibility to the playing field at the Creston and District Community Complex.
