Having sailed to Alaska multiple times, I can tell you that it’s very different than any other cruise you might take. And over my time, I’ve picked up some of the best tips and things to know that most people never share. Here’s what you’ll want to know before you sail… or even book your trip. You might see people online fretting over one Alaskan itinerary or another when trying to pick a cruise. I’m here to say that if you’re sailing a traditional 7-day trip, you can stop worrying.

Let’s be honest. Most cruise passengers will never see how the “other half” live on a cruise ship. The vast majority of us sail in an interior or oceanview or balcony cabin and have a fine time on the ship. These rooms are cozy (almost always less than 200 square feet), decently appointed and have everything we need for a week on a cruise ship. But what if you’re used to the finer things in life and a regular cruise cabin won’t do? Cruise lines are happy to help.

No matter which cruise line you sail, crew gratuities — also known as “service charges” or “crew appreciation” — are a fact of life. This includes sailing on Princess. While you have your cruise fare and then any extras like drinks, specialty restaurants, gambling and shore excursions, you also have a daily fee that goes to the crew as a “thank you” for the service they provide. These charges can add up for passengers.

That’s one way of getting on the ship we’ve never seen anyone try before…Earlier this month, a man was arrested after climbing up the mooring lines of a cruise ship docked in Sydney, Australia. While mooring lines have large circular discs designed to keep rodents from running up the lines and to the ship (known more commonly as rat guards), they seem to be no match for a person wanting to give it a try. The video shows the man scaling up the rope at the bow of the ship while upside down.

If you are cruising to Alaska, then it’s almost assured that your ship will make a stop in Juneau. Alaska’s capital city — and the second largest city in the state despite having just about 30,000 residents — is among the busiest cruise ports in the region. There’s good reason for the popularity. Unlike some stops that cruise ships make, Juneau is a city that also has tourism rather than a city just built for tourism.
