Trump Administration cuts to federal programs have been felt across the government. And while you might think that cruising would be immune to a dismantling of federal agencies, it’s actually seeing a big impact in the form of less oversight and public information regarding health and cleanliness. After years of delays, the deadline for having a “REAL ID” to travel by air finally is here. But do you need one to cruise? You might have heard about REAL ID already. As of May 7, 2025 anyone flying domestically in the United States now needs to have one of these types of identification. You can also fly with a passport or an enhanced driver’s license (issued by only a select few states). But for most people traveling the U.S., they are going to use what’s known as a REAL ID.

Are you going to need a different form of ID to sail on a Carnival cruise in the near future? If you’re on social media you might have been under that impression with the roll out of new REAL ID requirements. However, Carnival says that this is simply not true and wants to put a stop to claims otherwise. According to Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald, the mix-up stems from a Facebook page that posted passengers will be required to have a REAL ID in order to cruise.
