Culture Study

Culture Study

The term "Culture Study" is a twist on "Cultural Studies," which refers to an academic discipline focused on understanding the culture around us. Early scholars in this field believed that any cultural item, regardless of its sophistication, was valuable to explore if it brought meaning or enjoyment to people. My perspective on culture combines my background as a cultural studies professor, where I learned that everything can be fascinating with the right analysis and context, along with my experience as a Culture Writer for BuzzFeed News, where I discovered that engaging in reporting and conversations with people makes cultural topics even more intriguing.

We worked hard to make this one accessible to newbies *and* compelling to longtime practitioners/readers, so click the magic link to listen wherever you get your podcasts….or you can find it here.

For today’s Tuesday Thread, we’re going to do a variation on the ‘concierge’ sub-genre where people ask how what to read / listen to / watch (and others in the community provide suggestions)…..and instead help each other sell, give away, or acquire items secondhand.

Big Secret: I can see the backend stats on this newsletter. That means I know that many of the people who open this newsletter the most aren’t paid subscribers. There are so many reasons why that might be the case, but if you have the means and you value the work here — and want to keep interviews like this outside of the paywall — consider becoming a paid subscriber.

I love Advice Time. I love the questions, I love the answers, I love how diligent people have become at coming back to the thread to find and address later questions to people to don’t feel like their post is left all alone and advice-less.
