Culture Study
The term "Culture Study" is a twist on "Cultural Studies," which refers to an academic discipline focused on understanding the culture around us. Early scholars in this field believed that any cultural item, regardless of its sophistication, was valuable to explore if it brought meaning or enjoyment to people. My perspective on culture combines my background as a cultural studies professor, where I learned that everything can be fascinating with the right analysis and context, along with my experience as a Culture Writer for BuzzFeed News, where I discovered that engaging in reporting and conversations with people makes cultural topics even more intriguing.

First: Celebrate your mom, your motherhood, your resistance to motherhood (alongside appreciation of others who’ve embraced it)….or commemorate being part of the Dead Mom’s Club by donating to the National Bail Out’s targeted effort to bail out Black moms. Small donations can make a massive difference in the lives of these moms and their families. I know many Culture Study moms have already donated as a part of their own Mother’s Day Celebration.

I felt like writing today, which is why you’re getting a little piece in your inbox mid-day on a Thursday! If you have some extra time in your day, consider returning to the Culture Study Job Fair from Tuesday — there are hundreds of later-to-the-game posts, questions, and job opportunities. And also make sure you check out this week’s Culture Study pod on Tate McRae— it’s one of my favs of the year. This is a post about patience — particularly when it comes to making friends.

Over the past four months I’ve received a bunch of shitty emails. Not shitty in form, or shitty in intent, but shitty in ramifications. These emails came from people who’d worked for the U.S. federal government in some way (or in an industry funded by the government) who have been unceremoniously (and in many cases, illegally) laid off.

That’s one way to intro a book: it’s the best thing I’ve read this year. Also the most exhilarating, whimsical, and insightful book I’ve read this year. I could say “just trust me,” as I often do, and hope you’ll see part of why in the conversation below. But if you want to read something that will reorganize the way you think about the way AI, the performance of self, and just the internet broadly in this moment, something propulsive and unexpected, — Vauhini Vara’s Searches is that book.
